I have a 1993 60hp Evinrude. I am trying to replace the water pump but I cannot access see or access the connection to the shift rod. One video I watch It says to remove the VRO pump but he didn't show how to remove it. ( I have no idea how to remove it). Google AI says remove the starter but the third screw is buried and it looks like I need to take the intake air silencer cover off, which is about 2 dozen screws. Does anyone have any suggestions of the best way to access the shift rod connection point?

3 cyl 60 hp?
Look for a rod on right side of engine that goes from shift linkage arm down & turns inboard. Has a hair pin in it....
Pull hair pin up & out. Push that rod inward & shift linkage will disconnect.

I understand that part. Very easy but the point where rod connects is buried behind the VRO oil injection pump makes it impossible to see the connection. I believe it is necessary to see the connection in order to reattach it.

No. It will line up & connect pretty much by itself. If not, a little wiggle & it will. You are getting overly concerned.

Yes understand that part. That's simple

Thank you, that is the answer I was looking for. Much appreciated.
