Alpha One Shifting Problem

Oh my…. Looks like you hit a nerve there with the ghost Basque…

Come on ghost…. Light up a bit and be helpful. It’s obvious he’s struggling here and could use some help.

Basque,

Are you saying with the muffs on running the engine, the shifter doesn’t engage in forward or reverse? And how are you determining that it’s actually going into gear with the engine off? Are you shifting it, then checking the prop rotation?

Hi Kirk, that's what's happening. I'm able to lock the prop via the controls, engine off. Start her up, with muffs and no engagement.
Thanks again for responding.

I've checked the differential b/t forward and reverse on the control cable. It is 3 1/8". That is supposed to be spec.

Well this seems a bit weird. After replacing the lower shift cable and getting the lower unit back in place, did you try engaging it by hand prior to hooking the cable back up to the shift plate?

Here is a pretty good video on shift cable replacement. And this is pretty straight forward. But I thought I’d share it. I can’t imagine why having the engine running would be any different than engine off except fine tuning the full reverse engagement. The other one I didn’t fully understand when adjusting my cables was why having it in the water vs running on the muffs made a difference? But it does…

in my case I didn’t have any issues with getting fully engaged in forward and reverse after some adjustment, but bringing it out of gear into neutral is where I still have an issue. The shift arm comes to the neutral position, but it’s still in forward gear. I have to press the shift button and bring it back a little further towards reverse to get it to disengage. These things can drive a guy nuts! I’m still not sure how to remedy this.

Well Ghost... I can see your frustration level trying to help folks on a forum, and have guys not listen. But i didn't get that impression that Basque was one of them. once you suggested having a professional look at it , things went sideways...

The only reason i got in on this thread is that i'm still tinkering with a shift linkage issue myself, and dealing with a shift interrupter switch issue too. I was trying to learn something here, by offering my limited experience as i'm trying to fix mine. That's it...Often times you go through this stuff systematically by the book, and THINK you have done everything right, but have obviously missed something crucial along the way that has you scratching your head.... At that point you either go through everything again, listen to suggestions , and trouble shooting ideas, or take it to the shop where a pro can fix it.....

I'm a pretty easy going guy, that has no budding asperations to become a boat mechanic at all, but i've also got an old boat we love that is too damn expensive to take to the shop every time something goes wrong. These pros, like you, are swamped most the time anyway and wait time could be months in a small shop. So i try and do a lot of my repairs and maintenance myself to cut down on cost, and get me back out there fishing again sooner. I appreciate you guys spending time on the forum trying to help us do it yourself guys a lot. But... i know when it's time to cut my losses and take it to the shop too.

With that being said, i'm not ready to give up on my adjustments just yet. Maybe I could start a new thread if ya think its best, and pick your brain a bit more. Kirk
