Water pump rebuild 93 9.9 HP Evinrude Yachtwin Longshaft

I am working on a 93 9.9 Yachtwin Long Shaft. For the life of me I can't get to the lower unit, to rebuild the water pump. I remove the bolts from the lower end and the spacer/adapter and the adapter won't drop but 1/16 at most. I can twist it side to side and see the shift linkage bolt but can't get anything in there to loosen the bolt. It just wont lower enough to remove it. Any ideas how to address this? I have looked in the manual and it focuses on the actual rebuild and not the teardown.

Move the shifter into reverse it should pull up on the shift rod make sure the lower unit shifts also. Now as you drop the lower move the shifting lever into forward at the same time. It may be the reverse of what I told you but you should figure it out.

The lower unit moves and shifts fine. Since it is a long shaft it has an adapter just above the lower unit. I removed all the bolts and shifted forward. Only the lower unit will drop the adapter loosens enough to twist and drop barely 1/16th of an inch and that is it. Unfortunately that is where the linkage is connected and I can't reach it.

Does it have the long water pipe in it? If so it may be stuck on the rubber bushing in there.

I believe it does. What are my options to get past that? Oddly enough the lower unit drops enough to have access to the water pump's bolts. My fear doing it that way is bending or losing something while pulling a balancing act. I can see the shift linkage, a large tube/shaft and a medium size metal shaft.

This motor has been a wild ride so far and I am getting it slowly into shape. I have $300 into it total and I am learning a lot so far. I appreciate your time.

Did you take the top bolts out of the extension?

It could be the drive shaft is stuck in the powerhead. But even so using the shifter should get at least one of the coupler bolters where you can get to it. Are you turning the prop when you are shifting it.

Do you have 12 bolts out ?----I do not believe the driveshaft is stuck.-----Turn throttle to idle and operate shift lever to get more room to take the one bolt out of the shift connecter.

OK Cross your fingers. I re-attached the lower unit with two bolts and made sure the throttle was sitting at idle and re-shifted to forward while turning the prop and now I can get a 3/8 socket in there. However, I had to run to town with the wife, I will let you know how it goes when I get back. Thanks !!!:D

Well so far I managed to get the lower off and the adapter has decided it's not coming off. I think its caught on the water pipe. I'll wd40 it and see if I can get it to cooperate. I figure while I have the lower off I should clean it all up. I'll share the progress on this post. Thanks for all you suggestions.
