1990 evinrude 8 hp recoil starter spring

Hello to all, new to this forum, and of course need some help. I unfortunately removed the recoil starter to access the 10mm nut to remove the carburetor for cleaning. This I see now has created a bigger problem than I had before. I was able to reassemble the starter, but not able to get the spring to engage the lower part of the housing. Nothing is jammed, but I can't figure this out. I assume ( yeah I know) I'm not the 1st one to experience this issue, I can only hope that it's someone who belongs to this forum. Thanks, Jersey Bob

I would recommend looking up the procedure on Youtube and/or getting a service manual. I think it would be a lot easier to see what you have to do than reading instructions here.

This is the vertical spool type of starter ?

If so look at the manual for 1971 to 1989 models on the boatinfo website ( the manual for 1990-2001 does not seem to cover it) You may need to look up the number of turns by which the spring is pre-wound as well as reading the general procedure.

Sorry this forum will not allow me to post a link to boatinfo

YouTube videos are all very well except that you cannot tell the good ones from the ones that give wrong/ bad information

After some viewing, finally came across the video that anyone who has this issue need to watch. repair johnson evinrude outboard recoil starter. This guy did a great job. Took me about 15 minutes to reassemble the starter the correct way. I'm sorry I didn't find it yesterday, there must be 50 videos about the flat spring type starters. Thanks for all the help and I hope this can help someone else. Just putting the boat in the water this weekend I'm afraid I'll be back Monday with more questions. All my work on DD 8-92s isn't helping at all. Jersey Bob

Good job with the recoil starter! I would still recommend getting an OMC service manual if you plan on doing your own work on your motor.
