4.3l mercruiser not starting

I've barred engine's for years , I'm talking about 3406 a-b -and c's cert. In all. Cert. In old. Detroit 318 teens and supercharged with turbo on top silver 92 had air to keep fuel rail in check. Had a small piston. Learned alot about loopers an crossflow from old stuff.

the tool for turning the crank requires removing the harmonic balancer. i have turne dozens of motors by the crank bolt, it wouldnt hurt to see if the engine spins without much effort. if its locked up, i wouldnt push forward. but you are really jumping 12 steps ahead. the way the OP describes it, it could be as simple as a bad solenoid, weak battery, etc. pull the plugs, see if you get it to spin, if it doesnt , pull the starter, put a screwdrives between the teeth of the flywheel and see if it spins, also, inspect the flywheel teeth.

oh, btw, i never snapped a bolt in a crank, i have stripped one or 2 in the past

With spark plugs out, and ya know lower unit is not locked up. ( simply turn prop.) For lower half of lower unit. If driveshaft pinion is locked up, obviously pull driveshaft half. Or just pull out drive. Then if motor doesn't turn its locked up. Do y'all want the OP to buy your unnecessary tool. Do y'all understand how hard in some boat applications to attach a harmonic balancer puller , to remove balancer. Just to use your$200 tool.
If lower unit is not locked up and flex plate is good. Motor should turn over easy with plugs out. If not motor is locked up. I'm assuming y'all think OP is stupid enough to break bolt.
Stang32, how did ya strip threads in crankshaft (Volvo-Penta I guess)

Happy Father's Day to all.
Please tell how ya pull balancer with 3" of clearance in front . explain that one , great masters of boats. You can't, cause y'all charge customers for unnecessary work , what a joke. If I have 2-3" of clearance in front of balancer can't get puller on front, what do yous guys tell customer?
I can't turn motor over without my special tool?

Lets stop with the BS with the stupid questions..

There is no reason to pull a balancer off any engine unless you are resealing or rebuilding.

Then don't tell the guy to buy a $200 tool when he probably doesnt need it, Ace. The op never said anything about water entering his engine anyway. He should pull the starter & have it tested. If it's ok go from there. By time you guys are done you'll have him buying a long block.

My point ' is y'all said l need your tool to turn engine . now answer questions, if 2-3" clearance in front of engine , how do you get balancer off. Very simple Q. Don't tell me to look a manual. Because applications are different.

exactly, sometimes these posts get so off track, and yes, i had a solenoid last week that was bad and it sounded like the battery was low, made a grinding sound, but when you jumped the solenoid, the starter worked fine, changed the solenoid and the engine was fine.

when you see hoofprints, dont assume its a unicorn.

no, it made what sounded like a grinding noise. i thought it was something else till i stood on top of the motror an someone turned the key
