Johnson 115 90 degree 1995 shift linckage position?????

I am about ready to put my power head back on the mid-section. However, I see that just in front of the drive shaft, the linkage rod needs to be positioned. It has kind of zig zag shaft at the top with a hole in it. It will spin a full 360 degrees now. What is the position that it needs to be in what I drop the power head back on?

I don't understand how the shaft makes a forward and reverse condition for the motor. Does it go up and down also.

That makes sense now about the up and down motion.
I need a little more on the position. If you mean that the hole in the rod should face forward, than I have the option of having that hole face forward with the zig zag to the right or to the left???

Or do you mean the hole in the rod should open to the port and starboard. If so, should that zig zag be forward or reversed.

The shaft will spin around 360 degrees!
 
By turning the shift rod you change the shift rod height.--This in turn changes your shift adjustment.--------The shift rod should NOT be turned.---------You may now have to remove the lower unit to set this correctly !!

I always put it back to where it was when I took the power head off (or close to it) I noticed that it turned but I always turned it back the same amount.

That said, how would I know if the shift rod height changed? I'm assuming that something fits through that hole in the shift rod and when "Boobie, one of the participants in this thread" said hole to the front, he meant that the shift rod should be turned so that the rod with the hole was forward and opening was port and starboard.

I am planning on rebuilding water pump anyway before next Spring. So, I guess I will get a better look at things then, but knowing whether or not the rod is to high or to low is a mystery to me now. How would going into the lower unit help with the adjustment? Say I turned 360 degrees once. Would not turning it back 360 degrees leave it in the same position. Why would I have to go into the lower unit to make some sort of adjustment.

Confused still.
