Need to set the idle on 1979 55hp Johnson

I do not think there is an adjustment on the carbs themselves but I could be wrong. There is a large spring loaded screw on the linkage side but that looks like it is connected to the timing under the flywheel. I can adjust that a 1/2 turn to 2 turns and it sounds ok. But when I go for a ride then bring the throttle stick back into neutral, it is idling way to high.. I would love to know the correct procedure to properly set the idle speed. Thanks

I think your carbs have fixed orifices, there is no adjustment.
Have you checked the adjustment on the throttle cable to see if it is pulling the throttle linkage back to the idle position?

Yes. I have. That's the black plastic thumb screw roller right beside the shift cable adjuster. Is that adjusted before the timing screw that moves the carb linkage and timing?

The slip ring can get gummed up over a period of time. It needs to be taken apart cleaned and then greased if it is sticky.

I checked the movement with the connector removed. It moves quite easy
