water pump question 1976 7.5hp electric

Hello All! My first post!

Am currently working on my 7.5 merc to replace the water pump. I have the top housing off the pump & impeller removed, how do I get the lower housing off? It appears it should just pry up but it doesn't want to budge. I also note that the stainless bowl inside the lower housing (the impeller rides in it) is supposed to be removable from the housing but how do you do this as there is no where to pry or grab it???

Can anyone help?

To replace the impeller you do not need to remove the lower housing.-----------Is the stainless cup worn / out of place from heat ??

Hi racerone, many thanks for the reply!! I need to replace the entire assembly, don't know what happened but after a few hours of use the newly installed impeller completely disintegrated destroying the upper pump case & scoring the bowl somewhat. I suspect an incorrect impeller or I had the vanes facing the wrong way.

Any ideas to take the lower pump housing off? I can't find any reason it should not just lift out, does not the two pump studs hold the whole thing together? I can not see any other fasteners in the exploded drawings I've found online.

Thanks for the help and tips, greatly appreciated!!!
I will try some force to get the lower housing up, I guess if there is nothing holding it, it must be just stuck down with something. If that doesn't work it's time for a hammer.

Use a pair of screw drivers to pry it up, being careful to do it evenly all around. There's a shim below it that goes back in with the replacement housing.

You guys Rock! I got the pump off, many thanks. My problem was I was not aware the lower housing had a flange & oring on the bottom which actually plugs into the aluminum casting and forms part of the driveshaft lower seal. The trick was tapping with a wood block while pulling straight up as suggested.

I am however having another problem, I can't get the lower end back on. I have had the lower end off this motor in the past & it takes hours of frustrating wiggling and fighting to get it back on. I can get it far enough that the water tube gets within a 1/2 in of the pump & then it seems to jam. I can't exactly tell if its the shift rod hitting or the driveshaft but I think it is the shift rod. I have been following the advice of a utube video that says to put the shifter & lower end in reverse during assembly so that when you rotate the prop the pump rotates the right direction?

Do any of you experts have any tricks for this? It simply can't be this hard.

This should be a 2 minute job !--------Put gearcase in forward and shift lever in forward.--------Assemble and it may require turning the flywheel slowly to get the splines to engage.----Done this many times with no issues !

That is NOT an easy job! (Those of you who think otherwise have obviously not done a "slanter".)

I've done dozens of them and, at one time or another, have spent a frustrating hour getting the damn thing back together,

Congrats.

Jeff
