95 mercury 60 hp idle problem

Just got a 95 party barge with a 60 hp , mercury tracker pro series 60 hp .previous owner had carbs rebuilt and new plugs. Has 120 compression in all three cyl . It idles high and rough for 30 sec then dies , like it runs out of gas . His mechanic said the stater is out . Does not sound right to me . Any ideas please
 
You say "just got" - so the very first time you tried running it these were the symptoms OR it ran ok a couple of times and now this is what's happening.

If the stator was "out" it probably wouldn't start at all.

Also could you describe your starting procedure, as in:

Turn the key to ON
Depress the key to prime/choke the motor
Then to start

If that's your method and the motor acts as you describe - revs high for a sec, then runs like crap and then dies that would tend to indicate a fuel issue.

And if this "mechanic" that says the stator is bad is the same one that serviced the carbs, I would not be surprised...
 
That motor uses an enrichment system with a solenoid valve to flood the motor with gas (instead of a choke). If that valve is not closing tightly, that's what they do.
