Help! does this sound possible? or is dealer cheating me :(

Hi guys, (I live outside the US, so we only have 2 'official dealers' here - please bear with me)..
I bought twin 115's that were used. 2006 model. I don't have much cash to buy new..
Before buying the engines I wanted the mercury dealer to check them. I couldn't really afford the computer check but the dealer said they could do a manual pressure check as a viable alternative which was 1/2 the price.
everything seemed ok and they said no problems. 'change the spark plugs, get a full service etc'. I went ahead and bought the engines.. did the full service, change spark plugs, oil filter etc.
1 month later after my boat was ready, a 3rd party company fitted the engines, and I went for a test drive with them.
The left outboard starts with a sold consistent alarm after 3000rpm. It wont go above that. (I have read that usually means overheating sensor?).
Anyway, I took it in, gave it to the other dealer (part of their franchise in a diff city) and they came back after a few days and said computer shows error code 4? 1 of the pistons has 0 pressure.
"we suggest you get a new engine. these are old and not worth the hassle to repair. repair will cost around $3,000 to $4,000" (new 115 engine in this part of the world cost around $9,500).
Labour is cheap here generally (as they use 3rd world workers.) but that will cost around $750. The rest on parts..
Does that sound realistic? or are they cheating me..
After all the cost I've incurred/about to incur I could have bought a single 200hp Merc/Ya/Suz for same price..
Please help advise..

To me they are SOBs...they should have done the computer scan as part of the sale for no charge.

Ok...what does a manual gauge say the cylinder compression is? What were the compression numbers when you bought it?

Probably just needs a new water pump impeller. OEM parts about $50 here.

Hi the guys I bought it from were not the dealer so they would not have a computer. I got the dealer independently to check.
at the time the manual gauge check was around $150.. the whole computer testing thing would have been around $500.. unfortunately I chose the manual check.

Ok...what does a manual gauge say the cylinder compression is? What were the compression numbers when you bought it? - I don't have these numbers I was standing next to the dealer guys when they checked, they just said that is fine.. (the other dealer is saying the piston cylinder number 4 has zero (0) pressure. and for them to open it up and do a full examination will cost around $1,500.. and there are some parts to replace bore hole, casket etc.. it is an old model so they will need to make these manually..)

Damn right. So they offered you a computer scan "or" a manual check? As in you pick either or? If so that is nonsense. FYI, a computer scan doesn't tell you what the compression is. They should have done a compression test, ran each engine on a dyno WHILE hooked up to the laptop, and made sure these engines were free of faults and good to go. Are these engines OptiMax's?

Thanks for the info guys.

These are 115 EFI's 2006. 4 stroke.

Do you think taking to an outside small local outfit would be better in this situation? (i.e. getting the fault report from the dealer).
It might be 1/2 the price I hope. Although they may waste a lot of time trying to fix it or identify the problem..

what do you think?

I would go with this because I doubt if low compression would set an alarm off. An overheat would set the alarm off and limit rpm.

i read this yesterday..i read it again today..more than once both times..every time i read it i get more pissed off...the first thing i would do is verify the compression readings on both engines and make a decision from there..please post compression readings on here when you take them(or get them taken by a reliable person) .....
