I bought a 65 mfg with I think the original motor. Seller said he would fire it up by dumping a little pre mix in the top of the carb because he didn't want to pump old gas thru carb. It fired right up and I assumed probably carb needed cleaning and that was just his cover up when I bought it. Sure enough it will fire a second or 2 sometime 5 or 6 and quit. Will not idle or rev up. I have never dealt with a carb like this before but took the glass bowl off the bottom of the fuel pump and cleaned it 3 times now after priming gas from my other tank in it and it had some rust in the bowl. Does anyone have a link or pics on taking a part the carb and cleaning it? I have looked around on youtube and google for help but not finding anything with this carb? Please help.
 
The important part is after you separate the top body portion from the bottom portion. You will see two (2) high speed nozzles, one (1) each attached to the bottom body with two screws each. Before you loosen those screws, scribe a mark on the bottom carburetor body, around the part that is screwed down.

The purpose of this is, unless you have the special alignment tool, is to keep the nozzles aligned (centered) so that fuel is divided properly as it travels downwards into the intake manifold and the fuel dividers. Other than this... nothing really special.

(Carburetor Adjustments - Older V/4 Downdraft Carb)

NOTE: The early model downdraft carburetors incorporated "Adjustable High Speed Jets". The later model downdraft carburetors used "Fixed High Speed Jets". Follow the below instructions accordingly.

NOTE: If you do not have adjustable high speed jets, ignore those paragraphs pertaining to same...... BUT do make sure that you manually inspect and clean the two brass fixed high speed jets which would be located in back of the two 7/16" slotted hex head bolts in the bottom front portion of the float chamber.
 
Lift the center High Speed Control lever and turn it so that the point faces forward, resting on the high ridge. This will disengage the lever control gear from the individual high speed jets (slots). Have the slow speed needle valve knobs installed upside down so that they can be turned without encountering any obstruction.

Gently seat each of the High Speed needle valves, then back each one out one (1) turn. Gently seat each of the Slow Speed needle valves, then back each one out one and one half (1-1/2) turns. NOTE... have the jam nut on the s/speed needles snug so that vibration won't have any effect on them, but loose enough so that you can turn them without a great amount of effort.

(High Speed)
With a reliable person at the wheel, and one kneeling in front of the engine, start the engine (yes, it will run lousy with the above initial needle valve settings), put it into forward gear, and apply full throttle. Start with the High Speed adjustment on the left using a screwdriver that properly fits the slot.

(High Speed Adjustments)
At full throttle, with the proper size screwdriver, slowly start turning one of the H/S needles in segments of 1/8 turn, waiting momentarily for the engine to respond, then repeat turning. You will reach a point where the engine will start to die out. At that point, back that needle valve out approximately 1/4 turn. Now, go to the other High Speed needle valve and repeat that procedure. At some point in that 1/4 turn out, you will find the smoothest high speed setting (you can now lower the throttle rpm). That will have both high speed needle valves set correctly, and at that point you can lift that center lever adjustment of that high ridge, keeping it lifted until the point is facing the engine, then lower it into its proper position. (When you turn that lever now, you're adjusting both High Speed needle valves at the same time.)

(Slow Speed Adjustments)
Now, lowering the rpms of course, take the engine out of gear and set the throttle just to where the engine will stay running. Again, in segments of 1/8 turn, slowly start turning in one of the slow speed needle valves, waiting a few seconds between each turning for the engine to respond. As you turn the s/speed needles in, the rpms will increase..... and as it does, lower the rpms to where the engine will just stay running (otherwise the rpms will climb quite high). You will reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back the needle valve out 1/4 turn. Repeat the process with the remaining slow speed needle. Again, at some point in that 1/4 turn out, you will find the smoothest setting. When finished, tighten the jam nut somewhat, then remove and reinstall the s/speed knobs correctly (right side up).

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

Thanks, glad I waited for help before taking it a part now. Probably won't get a chance to do it until Saturday so i may be back then for more help.
 
Well I started removing the carb this morning but got to thinking maybe it has a neutral safety swithc. Shift linkage is out of adjustment so had to unhook to get in neutral. It starts but doesn't rev very well and usually stalls agin after a few seconds. I then tried with choke on it will stay running and rev real high with choke on a little it will run pretty good. Would I damage anything if I spray carb cleaner in where the fuel line hooks up and then blew compressed air in to try cleaning with out taking the carb all apart? Would that even do any good or is it gonna need to be taken aprt?
 
These are excellent / easy to work on / simple motors.------Blowing compressed air in there and carbcleaner ( mechanic in a can ) is not recommended.-----------Take the time to learn about this motor and how it works and you will be happy to own that motor.-------The carburetor is actually quite simple to work on.-------Just take your time and be patient.
 
Thanks, glad I asked first. I am confused tho because I see 2 high speed adjust on the front of the carb same as evinrude model 60552 that have 1 screw on each side of the plate holding it to the upper carb body alnog with the center adjuster with a black arrow style knob. Is this the piece I need to mark before removing or is there something else under the top half of the carb that I need to mark after I remove that?
 
I think you should post a picture of the motor and carburetor so we can see what you actually have.--------I think there are 2 fixed high speed jets and 2 adjustable low speed jets.

A safety switch would most likely be back in the distributor section... where it should be anyway.

No... do not be spraying carburetor cleaner in there like that. There are no short cuts... the carb needs to be torn down.

That carburetor no doubt does not have adjustable High Speed needle valves... there will be two high speed jets located behind the drain plug screws. Make absolutely sure that they are clean.
 
where do I start? Do I need to mark something on the front where it says high speed and has the dial before I remove anything or am I marking something underneath the top half and not worrying about that?

Sorry , I have not worked on one of these for a long time.----Surprised that your motor still has adjustable jets for high speed.-------------Now if I were you I would be looking for a 1966 model carburetor.----It had non adjustable high speed jets and therefor easier to work on and no risk of wrong adjustment.
 
That IS NOT a 1966 model carburetor and DOES NOT have fixed brass high speed jets. The large pointed lever in the center top portion of the carburetor adjusts both adjustable high speed jets at the same time. The adjustable jets are adjusted indivudally simply by lifting that pointed lever and rotating it 180 degrees to lift it out of the way. It willl be immediately obvious to you once you start to dismantle the carburetor. The adjustment procedure is within my previous reply.

If your engine is indeed a 1966 model, as "raceone" suggests, finding the proper carburetor would make your carburetor adjusting easier... however, this one should suffice.

The other two individual adjustable needle valves are of course slow speed needle valves.

There should be a small plate on the port (left) transom bracket (bkt that bolts engine to the boat) which would contain the model and serial number. Get the model number to us so that we are sure of what engine you have. The hood looks like a 1966 but the model number will reveal more.

If that plate is missing, look on the powerhead for a small quarter size core plug (looks like a small freeze out plug) which may also contain the model number.
 
It is a VXL-11A I noticed how it could lift off this morning while looking it over it does worry me about taking it a part but I figure whats the difference if I can't get it adjusted properly I will have to pay someone anyway might just try myself first. I did find several on eBay that claim have been rebuilt might buy 1 from there but they have a different style choke not electric would my electric/manual solenoid mount up to that style? If I count turns on the high and low speed while taking them out if I screw in the same amount on reassembly I should be tuned enough for it to start and run anyway right assuming it is just dirty and has blockage. It does fire right up with mix gas thru the top of carb.
 
Your motor is a 1965 model -as I stated your best bet is to find a 1966 -60 HP carburetor with fixed high speed jets. -And there is no need to be afraid to work on one of these carburetors , they are very simple.
 
Thanks again I have seen some without the adjustable high speed on eBay but they were from 58-61 i think I have not seen any that were from a 66 so not sure if it is like the older carb. I am waiting to see if a seller will allow me to return 1 that was rebuilt last summer if my motor still won't start with it. I am getting ready to head to work and if he won't let me return it I plan on taking mine a part tonight and hope I get it cleaned out and tuned correctly I'm sure I will be back with more questions and i hope everyone can continue helping me thanks again.
 
Those type carburetors graduated from adjustable high speed needle valve to brass high speed jets in 1961, so the carburetor pictured would be somewhere between 1958/59 50hp V4 models thru the 1960 75hp V4 model.
 
I just finished putting it back together 2 beers and some carb cleaner in my left eye everything is open that I could find I blew thru everything to verify no clogs. If this don't run now I guess I will check the fuel pump. On a side note the high speed needles and below the float had fuel low speed jets were both dry underneath didn't look like they were getting any fuel at all. They are almost screwed in completely maybe backed out 1/8 turn. I installed everything to the same number of turns that it was at before I took it apart. Was not near as difficult as I thought it would be. If it isn't raining I hope to install it in the morning and try it out.
 
Why would you put them in the same way they were ?---------Maybe those settings are " wrong " for the motor to start and keep running .
 
I want to try it set the way it was 1st because previous owner said it ran good and said he had it out 7 times over last summer. I figure I will start there 1st. The high speed valves are 1 turn out like factory settings above. The slow speed valves are almost closed completely only open about 1/8 or less turn. If it doesn't start I will adjust them out to 1 1/2 turns like recommended above and try again. If that doesn't work I will opon up the fuel pump and look there.
