"I'm having trouble with my 2000 Yamaha 40 HP 4 stroke starter. On initial startup the starter bendix will engage the flywheel but will not stay engaged to crank the engine. After 6-8 tries it will stay engaged and crank engine. I have a new battery so don't think that is my problem,also have checked all of the battery connections and don't think my problem is there. Anyone have any ideas what my problem could be? Any and all ideas would be greatly appreciated."
 
The bendix slides up and down

The bendix slides up and down the shaft just fine. When I hit the switch the bendix will just fly up the shaft but will not stay engaged into the flywheel to turn engine. I have lubed the shaft so I don't think that is the problem. The problem is getting the bendix to stay engaged in flywheel to crank engine. Any other suggestions?
