Hi all,

My mom just gave me a 2018 Yamaha outboard. It has less than 5 engine hours on it, but it hasn’t been run in 3 years. I took it out tonight to the lake and tried to run it. With fresh fuel in the internal tank, set to the correct fuel flow setting, and with fuel vent open, it would not start.

Any thoughts as to what the issue is?

Thanks!

Brian

Had a 4 stroke Yamaha dirt bike years ago that wouldn’t start after the winter layup. Was told to pull the spark plug and add about a tablespoon of engine oil down the plug hole, with the plug out and kill switch on to kick it over 6 or so times then let it sit for 30 minutes. Reinstall the plug a it would start after 6-8 kicks. Was explained to me that the oil had dripped off the rings and was lacking enough compression to start. Worked every spring. In the fall I ran the bike with the fuel shut off to drain the carburetor dry so I wouldn’t get the fuel turning to varnish and gumming up the carburetor. That could also be your issue if it sat with fuel for 3 years.
