Why does a lower unit get cracked

"My prop has about a half inch

"My prop has about a half inch chunk missing from one of the three blades. I never noticed a vibration or any loss of performance. I am wondering if this could have caused my lower unit to crack? I don't recall ever hitting anything....do props with gouges pose any danger to other parts I guess is what I am looking for here, also does anybody know where I can get a lower unit for a 1974 Mercury 650 ser# 381666 for a decent price?

"Also, if anybody can offer any advice as far as compatibility of other years and hp of different Mercury lower units, for example, right now I am looking at a lower unit from a Mercury 500 50hp, it looks the same and measures the same. Am I on the wrong track here??"

Usually has to do with water in the lower unit freezing (neglecting to maintain seals).Those lower units are not "heavy duty" i am told.The 4 cylinder units were better.If it looks the same use it.
