Who knows what The mysterious letter “X” stamped in front of model number means?..

To all omc experts out there. I recently purchased a 1976 Evinrude 70hp. This engine has a letter “x” stamped in front of the model number on the id plate. The same “x” is stamped on the top powerhead id plug, and the letter “x” has been hand scribed on the top of all three carburetors. This engine is completely original and was sold new in Wisconsin by M and J marine in Wausau. The serial number is J0001879. It is stilling powering the 1976 Glastron T166 boat also. My theory is that this engine was a factory prototype or test engine for some reason. Omc changed the rod design and carburetor design in 1976.
Any omc enigineers out there?.

That model had bogging problems and the X is to let any other dealer know the carbs had already been modified or replaced. Below is from Service Bulletin.

Thank you for your explanation. Can I get a copy of that service bulletin from you and do you have a service shop for these old motors?
Thanks again, Scott B.
