what does the trolling setting do on my 70s 4hp?

I recently bought a 70s something 4hp kicker motor for my boat. It runs great and moves my boat perfectly for salmon trolling. My only question is what does the trolling setting do and when should I use it? The guy I bought it from didnt know and never used it.
