Welch plug size and start/idle problems

Hi everyone, I've got a 1974 Johnson 40hp 40RL74S. The carb was rebuilt which helped needle valve problems, but the top Welch plug install looks really sloppy and I'm not sure if there was a tight seal. What is the size of that plug and does anyone know where to buy them (preferably in person)? I don't want to have to buy another $35 carb kit just for a Welch plug.

Would air leaks at the top plug cause starting and idling problems? When it actually does start (rarely after playing around with the idle screw) it dies after a while and when you put the choke back in.

also, the bottom jet where the bowl plug screw wasn't removed with the special tool. Air gets through fine though. Could that be a problem with the starting?

Thanks!

It shows the core plug as p/n 306392 on the parts pages at http://shop2.evinrude.com .
You will be able to get it from any Evinrude dealer.

Eight bucks, which is highway robbery. Also, yes !, to your questions about core plug leaking and idle problems.

Thanks for the response! I was looking for the size because maybe a local lawn mower store or hardware store might care core plugs for cents not dollars. I found the old one and it's close to 5/8ths diameter. I can't justify paying $8 on a tiny piece of metal when you could probably stick a nickel in the hole and seal it haha. But then again these carbs are so finicky that everything needs to be perfect. Can't seem to get it to start on the regular.
