I've been prepping my (new to me) used engine.
Today was the day to pull the rope.
The engine started on the second pull.
Water came out of 3 places (as I noticed).
The most important place was the little white plastic fitting on the back of the engine.
Water came out nicely.............GOOD steady stream that looked to be normal.

One of the other 2 places I noticed is at the front of the lower shroud.
1/4"(Approx.) hole right below the lower screw that holds the shroud together.

The third place is (front) between the 2 "plates" (NOT the anti-cavitation plate.
Parallel with the vent hole for the lower unit.
This hole is 1/32" (Approx.).

Water was coming out of these holes, BUT, NOT with the same force as the "Cooling water check port".

I don't like to assume anything.

I am GUESSING these flows are normal ???
I am guessing this is to cool the drive shaft from the heat of the exhaust ???

My question.
How many places should water exit this engine while it is running ???

Also, I noticed a poster at this forum suggested laying this motor on the opposite side of the tiller handle. My engine has a sticker showing to lay this engine on the tiller handle (for shipping/handling.

Most of the cooling water will exit with the exhaust through the prop hub. Some may dribble out the idle exhaust port occasionally, and of course the telltale "pee tube" for you to confirm cooling water pressure. The other spots are merely drains to allow the water to come out when the motor is pulled and laid up for the off season. That's normal operation.

Yes, the rule for laying a 9.8 down is "shifter up" (or tiller down). You can remember this by noting that you don't want to break off the shifter handle.
