Water temp gauge reads about 220 degrees I have replaced the gauge, thermostat (160 deg) and sending unit twice and it still reads the same. The thermostat housing gets warm but not enough to burn you or make you jerk your had back. Motor is not over heating at all. Any suggestions on why its reading so high?

could be the wire or wire connections. run a temp from sender to gauge and test it that way.If still high by verifying with a IR laser gun here`s a soulution i`ve used.
go to a electronics place/store/etc and buy a 5ooo ohm pot. use the center pin and one side pin . put this in series with the sender wire , bring engine to operating temp and rotate the pot to the reading of the IR gun. Now remove and read the ohms with an ohmmeter . buy 1/8 watt resistors to make that same value .connect them in series and wire in at the gauge or sender

Start from the begining.

Year of boat and is engine original?

What gage brand?

Did this just happen or has this been the case since you have owned the boat.

Details and history first so a bunch of questions or suggestions arent waisted due to a LACK of basic information...

Out drive (gen 1/gen2) is not important info at this stage.

Also glad you got "what was called for"

As it is now, you are the ONLY one who knows what that means...

There are certain brands and/or certain models within a brand of temp gages that use a different sending unit.

When they get mixed (usually the sending unit) what you are deascribing is the result but its usually a 20-30 degree difference.

As suggested a IR temp gun reading at thread base of sending unit would be a good start.

If over 200* then issue most likely is water flow related
