Water restrictor use

I can't find any information on what the reason for the water restrictor used in the water pump housing on mid 80's 15hp motors. The same housing on the 9.9hp's do not require it. Would there be a problem no having it on a 15hp mid 80's?

Yeah Boobie... Having replaced a couple hundred or so of those water pump assemblies, I'm a little puzzled by that mention.

In Marine Engine site it shows 9.9hp Evinrude mid 80's showing water pump housing without the water restrictor under the seal in the housing. In the listing it said the water restrictor is on 15hp only. it looks like a bushing which is item #40 in the water pump picture.

I really don't know the answer, but it (1984) shows a different pump housing and water tube grommet for the 9.9 than the 15. But they both supersede to the same replacement number. As I said, I don't know what that is all about.

I have a 15hp that does not have the restrictor and wondered if I need it.
