Water pump, where's the water?

1980 Johnson 35 hp model J35RLCSM. New impeller. Fresh water motor. No water at tell tale. Bucket testing. Deeply submerged. Removed L/U multiple times to check for water tube to pump connection. OK.Checked water tube for obstruction. OK.

Suggestions for what next greatly appreciated.

I've had two cases where the tell tale outlet was clogged up. Remove it, and check for debris and blow out with compressed air.

Engine was getting hot on exhaust cover. Could see stream of smoke from tell tale. Did try removing telltale hose. No difference.

Removed L/U again. Water tube connection is a real bear on this motor. Tube sways around when trying to line it up.

Also seeing connection on this motor is a real problem as it closes up.

Used a piece of soft wire to help line up connection. Guess I got it. It's pumping.

Verdict: No connection from pump body to water tube.

I had the same problem on a really old 35 hp. I could NOT lift it alone. What a job that was.
