water pump rebuild

I rebuilt the water pump on my 1994 40 elpto out board. After putting it back together it is now stuck in forward gear all the time. Need ideas on what I might of did wrong or what I need to fix.
 
You've got the upper and lower shift shafts out of synch. Put both in forward, take all the slack out of the lower shafter shaft, then slip her back up.

I am pretty much a green horn at this. Can you tell me where I can get a pic so I know what I am looking at to do this
 
Go to this sites "Outboard" parts, then "Mercury", and look up your motor. There's exploded views of the entire motor on there.
