Water pump kit items mariner 8hp

i need to replace the water pump.
I just got the waterpump kit (84181t).
One of the items looks like a small plastic half-disc (.9 inches in diameter), made of plastic.
I have no idea what to do with it. Does anybody know what it is for?
Also, how do I insert the impeller inside its metal housing without damaging it?
