shouldld you install key from top looking down or looking up

Sorry, I don't understand the question. Make, year, hp of engine, and general description of the problem?

!981 johnson 35 hp and looking for proper way to install impeller pump -key from long side of shaft or short side of shaft

This is one where the key sits in a little notch in the side of the shaft ?? ( some are pins through the shaft.)

Hold the key in its notch in the shaft and slide the impeller down the shaft into position.

Make sure you use the correct key for the impeller.
