I just bought a 83 Bayliner ca

I just bought a 83 Bayliner capri with a volvo penta AQ125A. I notice when I put the boat into the water and started it there was water spiting out of what I beleive is the water heat exchange cap. I went out for about a hour and half and the bilg was full. i'm glad my wife did not see it. Is this going to be a cheap fix? My first time boating Joe

"Is it raw water or fresh wate

"Is it raw water or fresh water what's leaking? Also, which part is leaking: cap 36 or cap 22? Cap 36 belongs to the coolant (fresh water) reservoir, and cap 22 belongs to the raw water strainer."

I believe it must be cap 22. W

I believe it must be cap 22. When I open the cap it has a plastic strainer inside so it must be the raw water.

"Check that the plastic housin

"Check that the plastic housing is not cracked and causing the leak. If it is just the gasket, that should be an easy fix."

"The plastic housing looks goo

"The plastic housing looks good, there is some worn look on the rubber seal and gasket. Would the local auto part store carry That sort of parts?"

"Nope, those are super-expensi

"Nope, those are super-expensive-pricey Volvo Penta parts that you will likely have to buy from your friendly neighbourhood Volvo Penta dealer. Alternatively, you can try to fabricate them yourself if you find the right type of gasket material. You can also try to shim the back of the current gasket to make it seal better."

I went down to the river and it's the plastic housing that is leaking. Do you know that part is called and where can I find it?

The part name is "strainer housing", and the link shows the part number...as well as the price (don't faint!!!). You have to get the part through a VP dealer, or from another source like Doug Russell (which seems a bit cheaper). I believe that the strainer housing is not available aftermarket.

"You are welcome. If it makes you feel any better, I had to buy the very same part for my engine a few years ago, and I paid in Canadian Dollars.
