Volvo MD2B timing

I have rebuilt an MD2B and have been working out some bugs in it. One of those is that when the engine is warmed up the starter has difficulty turning it over. I believe this may be caused by early fuel injection timing possibly being the result of crude measuring instruments or gasket compression or both. I'm proposing adding a .005 gasket under the injection pump thinking that would delay the timing. Not very professional and kinda trial and error but all I can think to do with my limited resources. Anyone with experience timing these engines?

I'd guess about 40 years old , but it looks like it was recently rebuilt and it turns it over like a good thing when it is cold. When its warmed up it stalls on the compression strokes but eventually starts.

Just a follow up on this. I removed the injection pump and put a .004in. spacer under it to delay the fuel injection and the motor turns over normally when warmed up.now. Never touched starter.
