underwater fishing camara in the gulf of mexico waste of money or?

hey was looking at adding a little something extra to my 19ft center console.... just didnt know how good these underwater camaras are or how they would be in the salt water like that. there like 75$ on ebay then you hook it to a lcd screen. was thinkin i could put it by my chum bucket but if i cant see well out of it or what not. so thought i would ask. thanks!

They are what they are - a gimiky way to actually see what's down there in a very limited range. The picture isn't bad, but you usually don't see very far and only what's right in front of the camera.

Much like a fishfinder is only truely used to see where bottom is and what kind of structure is down there, these might have some limited benefit. They are designed more to help catch fisherman as opposed to fish.

On a positive note, you can use them to get a good look at the hull or lower unit of your motor and last summer I saw a guy use one to try and figure how to "unstick" his anchor that was hung up...
