Trim motor stuck in "down" position

have a 2002 125hp Merc ELPTO. Out on the lake pulling tubes. was adjusting trim while pulling based on load (size of kid) on the tube to facilitate adequate planing. while changing riders while in neutral the trim motor started and stuck in down position, and wouldn't stop. I was in the back of the boat and thought someone was in the front depressing the throttle switch. no one touched it. had to hold switch in "up" position on either the lower cowl motor switch or at the throttle switch to get it to stop. finally took the cover off and disconnected a switch wire inside the cowl to get it to stop. "Up" function worked fine and stopped when disengaged, but "down" function would run continually and wouldn't shut off, without depressing either "up" switch. Now off the water and reconnected wires. now the motor cowl switch won't lower trim the motor but will raise it, but throttle switch still works fine to lower and raise. HELP!?!
