hi to all.
just bought a 40hp johnson motor mod.bj40eleds year mod. 1996. with a un servicable tilt assist system fitted on it. wondering if someone could explain the working principle of it.

Simply a gas filled cylinder operated by a by-pass valve. You open it - gas gone and no way to refill.

the b/pass assembly where the operating cable attaches to, is seized and i am afraid to pull it apart for fear of losing the gas. are they throw aways in this situation or can they be repaired.

Not repairable. You may try soaking the valve mechanism in PB blaster or similar hoping it has just corroded in the outer sleeve. However be careful using force, and do not 'aim' at anyone!!

You could try a 50:50 mix of ATF and Acetone on it and see if it works. Be patient. Check shop.evinrude.com, look up your mtr for diagrams and parts prices.
