top mount control cable placement

Have OMC top mount binnacle control. I was wondering if the shift cable goes on the port or starboard side of the control. I have no clue. Thank you in advance. cables were off control.

We don't know which control you have. Is it a single lever control? If it is, simply shift it from neutral to forward while watching the inside stuff. The N-F action will pull the shift cable. Further movement of the lever will push the throttle cable.
