Thermostat question

Got new thermostat in two pieces. Is this normal or is it a bad part. I suppose i could just push the shat into the body. But i want to test it first and i don't think it will shorten after cooling. Thoughts

Yea. I ordered one for my 98 15hp a few years back. I thought the same thing. But I put it together and installed it, been working fine since
