Tachometer malfunction

I just bought a 1987 200hp 2 stroke. I was test running it on the old boat before I move everything. I noticed the tachometer was reading 5500 at idle. The boat has been sitting a long time. Any ideas? It has the oil read out on the tac, it's non digital.
