"A single cylinder 5-6HP 2 stroke is only about 56#s, then you jump 20# to go to 2 cyl. The four strokes are heavier. Most ranges of 4-6 hp and then 8-12 hp use the same size block with diff bore and stroke. Most manufacturers have the specs noted online. In the 50's, Elgin, Westbend, Ted Williams and Chrysler were sturdy workhorses.; not to mention Evinrude and Johnson small engines. Mercury followed but quickly advanced into the racing end and pushed to larger hoursepower outboard while still maintaining the small line. Mercury Mariner line is foreign and good but I dont know how easy it would be for parts and repairs."
