starting problems on bravo III

Neighbor of mine at the lake has a 1999 Rinker 242 5.7 carburated engine with the bravo III outdrive. After replacement of the enginebecause of a spun main bearing, they are having problems starting it. If you fiddle with the shifter the starter will engage but it is erratic . Im thinking something is out of adjustment. The mechanic is taking his sweet time checking it and would love to give him a hand. If you jump the selenoid it will turn overmaking me think it is something in the shifter or does the bravo III have a shift interupter like the alpha's... any help would be appreciated.

Bravos dont use a shift interupter like Alpha, more likely the nuetral safety switch is going bad. Can be jumped out for tesing. should be 2 yellow wires or 2 yellow with red stripe wires. strip the insulation and twist together.

If you jump the selenoid it will turn over...
If not the NS switch then jump 12 volts to the yellow/red stripe wire on the solenoid. If it won't cause the starter to engage then replace the solenoid.
