"I have a 79 100hp V4 that will not shift into gear, shifter arm at the top near the motor will not move prop free spinning I've never had this motor in the water as I just got the boat, is this a lower unit problem or do I have to pull the power head. Will a broke shearpin cause the free spinning or a bad bellcrank cause it not to shift. Jim"

"Thjat could be eiyther a jammed shift linkage problem at the powerhead OR a lower unit problem.

To determine which, remove the 3/8" head hex shoulder bolt at the shift clevis, the shoulder bolt that goes thru the hole at the top of the shift rod, which is located under the bottom carburetor.
