"Dave, had a look through the service manual and doesn't look like it has to be "undone" in any fashion.
Instructions for removal of lower unit are simply -
disconnect the sparkplugs (safety issue)
tilt the motor
remove the prop (safety issue)
remove the speedometer pickup tube (if equipped)
shift motor into Neutral
remove trim tab and then the bolt in the trim tab housing
then remove the two lock-nuts from bottom/middle of cavitation plate
remove locknut from front of gear housing
loosen but do not completely remove the nuts on each side of the gear housing. When both are loosened by the same amount and the gear housing has separated, support it, and then completely remove the two nuts - it should then come free..."
