Shift linkage issue

Im having issues with the reverse catching gear and staying in gear bought a used lower unit locks in gear fine installed a brand new control cable forward gear catches fine reverse is bouncing. I adjusted the new cable out and got reverse to work then lost forward gear now im thinking the shift rod is out of wack any tips would greatly help its a 86 johnson 48spl boat has been in the shop since january and finally got it back to still having this issue

Did you set the shift rod height ??-----A specific dimension from your manual.-----These lower units are not robust , so review this procedure first to save big $$$ headache.

I do not have a manual and cant find the dimensions anywhere online i was hoping somebody on here might now off the top of the head

It is 20-29/32" for your motor.---------I do not know them off the top of my head.----There are many different ones listed on the chart.

I will try that when i get off work it was set 22 1/4 when i pulled the lower unit last night thankyou

How / what are you measuring ??------In neutral to the center of the hole ?

Yes is that not correct?

Your measurement is 20-29/32" from gearcase mounting surface to center of the hole.---In neutral.

Yes and still not enough linkage to go in gear correctly until new cable is adjusted all the way out till no forawrd gear
