Service Poppet valve and Thermostat

Hi all,

1998 Merc 90hp 3cyl 2stroke

Its the beginning of Winter now here in New Zealand. And this is the time when I usually to a bit of maintenance on my outboards.

I want to service the poppet valve and replace the thermostat on my engine. Just want to know the procedure for each before I rip into it. This may be the first time this has ever been done.

I just did my 115 hp Merc 4 cylinder. Remove the bolts, remove stuck gasket material, prep the surfaces for the new gasket and replace the parts in the right order. The gasket is thin and fragile so I used some tacky gasket sealer to hold it in place during installation.

I just got done doing mine after 17 years. It was full of silt. Here's a video that may give you some insight if you have never done it ( was my first time). I took all the parts to a dealer and all I needed was the gaskets...BF
