I have a 4.3 mercruiser 1990

We just started her up for the spring...when I put her in gear there is a loud scratch noise before it catches gear, then its fine....

what could that noise be from...thanks"

"Are you shifting into gear, forward and reverse, very quickly? Noise in reverse? Needs to be shifted quickly and you should only hear a clunk."

"As Guy says, don't shift into gear slowly. You need to be firm and quick for the first movement until you feel or hear the drive engage. You will also know when you're engaged as beyond this point , the engine rev's will pick up. With a little practice, you'll instinctively know how far forward or backward you have to go to engage without putting too much power to the prop."
