Riser surfaces

I'm replacing the risers/elbows/extensions on my FWC 440s. The parts came painted to include the mating surfaces. Does the paint need to be removed from the mating surface? Thanks

Thanks for the responses. Not sure I could get the paint off the surfaces anyway without causing slight damage and be back where I started. I am going over the surface looking for imperfections or burrs and addressing those. Thanks!

Now a new question; I assembled the components at home to make sure I had everything, and when I put the stainless sleevs in the exhaust, the sleeves don't seem to be long enough to connect elbow to spacer. The sleeves seem to almost be flush with the mating surfaces when inserted. I am concerned about water intrusion from the passages. I kept my old components and tried re-assembling those but it just doesn't seem right. Clear as mud?

Those sleeves are supposed to be long enough to contact both halves, as you suspect. Not sure what's going on there.
