Reverse gear only after changing water pump? Trouble down-under

Hi All,
Can you please assist me with the following issue?
I have a 1973 Mercury 1500 (150HP) which runs fine but after changing the water pump the prop will only go in reverse? I have tried moving the shift cam both directions, but I am now stumped?:confused:
Has anyone come across this problem before?
There is not much help available in Australia with old Mercs
PS: When I put the lower unit back on the powerhead, I had the transmission in forward (stated in manual)
Any help would be great!

Drop the LU, shift the shifter there into forward. Then, with the shifter at the top also in forward, stuff her back up.

PS: Turn the driveshaft CW and see that the prop is turning the right way for forward.

Just to clarify (and sorry to sound dumb) but do you literally mean drop the LU on the ground? Does it dislodge the gears? Which way do I turn the shifter in the lower unit?
I really appreciate your time.
