Remove brown paper from gasket?

I am replacing the water pump and housing on my BF50A and the new gaskets (from Honda) have a brown paper backing on one side and green on the other. The the old gaskets are green on both sides. I tried to remove the brown backing but it sure does not want to peel off. Before i damage it, is the brown meant to stay on the gasket?

Hi,
I don't know but if it's the gasket in the link below I might suspect that it's an old one that may have been left on a sunlit shelf and discolored.

The other gasket is a bright green as you said.

Either way, I don't think I would peel it and risk ruining it. If in doubt, smear a little gasket maker on or spray some Permatex Hi-Tack on it and use as is. It's not a "critical" application and will seal sufficiently if the part is properly torqued.

Just giving my opinion.

Good luck.
