Relocating my oil filter

I have a 1988 Seaswirl with a 5.7 liter OMC in it. I want to relocate the oil filter with a oil filter relocation kit. I can get a 0174291 which is the OMC OEM kit for $286.00 and change or go to a place like Summit and get a generic kit for under $100.00. Can I use the generic kit? Has anyone done the conversion?
