Reinstall Shift Rod Mariner 40 HP

New to Forum.
Can't figure out how to re-install the shift rod on my 1981 (I believe) Mariner 40 HP, Ser. 676 BL 410618 (Japanese made) motor. While changing the impeller for the first time, I mistakenly thought I have to also remove the shift rod, Bad mistake. I am very mechanically gifted but I can't understand how to reinstall the shift rod into the lower unit before reassembly, no matter what I do. Please anyone help. Thanks so much. :(:mad:

Thanks for your response. Looking at the drawing of the Gearhousing Ass'y on the Marine Engine website, pulling the propshaft looks fairly complicated.. Should I take it to a boat dealer/mechanic or is that something I could do myself? I have ell the tools, etc but haven't worked much on boat engines. Thanks again.
