" Have a 2001, 75 HP Mercury four-stroke. Problematic starting when cold even though it is summertime. Seems to be set at very low idle speed. Would this affect the starting ? When it's warmed up, it starts fine. Any suggestions to improve the cold starting ? Adjust timing, carburation, different plugs, or what ?? Thanks for any input.

" Bill,

Frequently the engines want more throttle than the linkage allows for starting. Try opening the throttle plates a little bit by hand and see if it helps cold starting.

Be very careful when you do this. Keep you hand away from the flywheel and starter, or anything else that you might get caught up in.

Make sure the choke is working properly.
