proper compression for a 1976 40 Hp evinrude

There are no numbers published , because all gauges are different.-------Most important is that they are both the same.--------Look for around 120 PSI.

Thanks racerone. I appreciate your reply. I am planning to buy a 1955 Crestliner boat with a 1976 40 hp tomorrow and I want to check out the motor for any serious problems.

Another thing to be watchful for on 70's model johnnyrudes is play (looseness) in the top mount, indicated by fore and aft play between the exhaust housing and steering arm. The old rubber mounts disolve badly when fuel containing alcohol drips on them.
Replacement mounts aren't cheap and the job of replacing them is a PIA (about 4.6 hrs. flat rate). Seeing alot of 70's model J/E's with this issue lately. If one is operated for any length of time with a fuel leak...it'll eat the mounts.
