"Just bought an old Bristol sloop with a 4cyl graymarine. The manual stresses priming the impeller when starting for the first time each year, but no indication of how. My thought was to pull the coil wire and crank the starter for a few seconds to get water moving through. Will that do it?"

The whole point of priming the impeller for the first run of the season is to wet it. If the impeller is dry friction will trash it when you turn the engine over. The best way to prime it would be to either remove a small plug that would be on the pump or disconnect one of the hoses and pour water into the pump. Again it needs to be wet before you turn the engine. You can use cooking oil also to lube it if you just want to turn it over without the mess. Do not use motor oil. You might get away with turning it over dry but I would not chance it.
