Power head swap out

My son-in-law just blew a rod in his 1982 Johnson 115 HP. outboard. We have a chance to get a 1977 Johnson 115 HP. outboard to replace it. The problem is that by looking at the diagrams, the power tilt assys. are different and the older one is missing a part on it and also needs a water pump impeller replaced. Our motor ( the 1982 ) is in good working order other than just blowing the rod. My question is, are the 2 power heads compatitable for changing only. The 2 different model numbers are as follows, 1982 ( model J115TLCNB ) and a 1977 ( model 115ETL77 ) We don't want to buy the other motor for swapping power heads if they won't fit. Thanks for any help you can give us.

They are basically the same engine, although the porting may be a bit different and the bosses for control linkage, power packs and relays may be different. You will need to look very closely at all of those.

The engine does not run fine, it broke a rod. :) When you determine things are fine on the other block, you will have to find out why exactly it broke that rod. It will something other than the rolling assembly that makes up the powerhead. Carbs. Ignition. Air leaks. etc.
