Popping at idle

1987 Merc Classic 50, just started "popping" at idle. Reed valve problem???

Use a timing light and see if it is firing steady on all 4 leads.-----------Have you adjusted low speed mixture needles ?

Found it when I got back to the dock, looses spark plug. Thanks

Ok. So now that I have it out of the water, cowl off, running on the hose. When I give it some throttle and let off, it puffs smoke from behind the switch box, and there is oil down the side of the block. Now I'm nervous

Replace the recirc line....cheap fix and expensive if not repaired

Could you post a pic? Not sure what the recirc line is located.

Found the problem. Blown Transfer cover gasket. I'll replace the recirc line while it's apart
