Pinion gear on pull cord issues

Still having problems with pinion gear not engaging when
I pull the rope, I have no clue as to what it could be, when I pull the cord the
Pinion just spins, does not jump up into position, is something wore out,
Do I need to replace something? Please help. Very aggravating

1972 model. No starter lockout. The friction spring around the bottom of the pinion is what makes it rise. Since it is a "friction" spring, do not oil or grease it.

You can put more tension on it by carefully bending it. I have also slightly "roughed them up", using a round chain saw file. Be sure to lube the internal hub so it won't bind. Also don't "jerk it" to engage, these bendix gears will crack. Pull slowly to engage, then once engaged give your starting force. This is a very simple and free fix.
